On August 26 2011, the group stage of the 16th Samsung Cup concluded in Beijing and the draw for the round of 16 was announced.
And then there were sixteen…
Two youngsters, Li Xuanhao 3p of China and Na Hyun 1p of Korea, who are both only 16 years old, made it through. Na and Lee are joined by fellow Koreans, Won Seongjin 9p, Lee Younggu 8p, Lee Sedol 9p, Kim Junghyun 3p, Park Younghun 9p and Kim Jiseok 7p. Li is joined by 7 other Chinese players, Guo Wenchao 5p, Li Zhe 6p, Chen Yaoye 9p, Tan Xiao 5p, Gu Li 9p, Kong Jie 9p and Peng Liyao 5p.
The Group of Death
Unfortunately, Park Junghwan 9p, the recent winner of the 24th Fujitsu Cup, did not progress from his group. As Agostino helpfully pointed out in my previous post, Park was in a particularly strong group (‘Group of Death’ for the football fans out there) with Piao Wenyao 9p, Chen Yaoye and Li Zhe.
The draw for the next round
While the top 16 are all incredibly strong, there are some games in particular to watch for in the round of 16. Lee Changho will face Gu Li in a replay of 21st Fujitsu Cup final (2008 – Gu won) and Lee Sedol will play Kong Jie in a rematch of last year’s 23rd Fujitsu Cup final (Kong won). The other matches are:
Kim Junghyun vs Chen Yaoye
Kim Jiseok vs Li Zhe
Won Seongjin vs Li Xuanhao
Na Hyun vs Peng Liyao
Lee Younggu vs Tan Xiao
Park Younghun vs Guo Wenchao
The players will face each other in Daejong, Korea on October 4-5 2011 to determine the quarter finalists.
Here are three more interesting games from the round of 32:
