Go is a game of ideas

And that’s one of the best things about it.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing online, on a plastic travel set or on a luxury kaya Go board.

The true beauty of the game lies in the moves you play.

And the ideas behind them.

But to play great moves you need great ideas, and we all know those aren’t so easy to come by.

Knowledge is power

Have you ever wondered how players who learned Go in Asia got so good at it?

It has a lot to do with access to better quality information.

The truth is, Go players in the Western world have been at a huge disadvantage for a long time, and still are, even today.

Compared to the limited information about Go that we have in English, the vast resources available to people who live in Asia are simply mind boggling.

And among the best of those resources is Baduk TV, a 24/7 Go channel, which has long been available to anyone with cable TV in Korea.

And now Baduk TV is available to you too.

Until now…

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Baduk TV English cost $20/month?

We have a team of highly skilled Go players producing a new video for you every 3 to 4 days on average.

Korean grammar is very different to English grammar and translating the videos isn’t as simple as just listening to a sentence and writing it down. The translator also needs to think about the intended meaning and rewrite the conversation so that it makes sense in English, and preserve as much useful information about Go as possible.

After a translator finishes work on a video, an editor reviews the translation and fixes any grammatical errors or awkward phrases to make the English as fluent as possible. This ensures that you have a seamless experience when watching the videos and that your concentration isn’t broken by poor translations.

This helps you to learn more.

On average, it takes the best part of a day for two highly skilled individuals to properly translate one hour of video. These people have families to support like everyone else, and are also more than capable of getting a good job elsewhere.

Can’t you make the subtitles cheaper?

Yes, we could, and we spent several months investigating the options for doing so. What we discovered was that either the quality of the translation or the understanding of Go suffered drastically when we cut costs.

This is a niche product and the market for this kind of service is limited.

We could reduce costs and produce low quality translations, with broken English and subtitles that aren’t in sync with what’s happening on the Go board, but that’s not the kind of service we wanted to create for Go players.

If you want something cheap and nasty, you should look elsewhere because this service isn’t for you.

This is a service for people who appreciate things being done properly.

Which plan should I subscribe to?

There’s nothing like trying things for yourself, and making a better educated decision in the end.

That’s why we also offer a Baduk TV Day Pass. The Baduk TV Day Pass includes access to all the features of our service for 24 hours, so you’ll have the opportunity to try everything for a week and then decide which plan is best for you if you.

After trying everything you can decide whether you want to subscribe to a monthly plan or not. It’s up to you.

Baduk TV is in Korean, how will I understand it?

That’s why we created Baduk TV English! Now if you can read English subtitles, you can understand Baduk TV.

That being said, many customers find they can follow the commentary, even without English, just by seeing the moves played out on the board. As someone who attended the World Amateur Go Championships and played Go with people from all around the world, I can honestly tell you that Go is a language in its own right.

If you’re not sure though, we have the Baduk TV Day Pass, which lets you try both Baduk TV English and Baduk TV On Demand with very little risk.

Will Baduk TV work on my phone?

It depends on how old your phone is, but it should work on practically all modern smartphones. All on demand videos (including the subtitled ones) work on mobile.

Live streaming is a bit trickier, but we’ve optimized Baduk TV Live to work on iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android using the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol.

HLS is the standard for live video on Apple devices and has been supported on Android since version 3.0 (Honeycomb). If you have an earlier version of Android, you can either install the Flash plugin for Android or upgrade the operating system to Honeycomb or later.

How do I pay you?

We use PayPal to receive payments, because that lets us accept secure payments via credit card, bank transfer and PayPal. PayPal is the market leader in safe online shopping.

You can pay by credit card, but because this is a monthly subscription you’ll have to create a PayPal account during the checkout process. We’re currently looking into adding some alternative payment methods, in addition to PayPal.

What if I change my mind or don’t like it?

Like all Go Game Guru products, Baduk TV is covered by our 30 day, 100% money back guarantee. If you have any problems, just let us know and we’ll refund your money.

I ordered some books from Go Game Guru and, while I was waiting for them to arrive, a friend gave me one of them as a birthday present. When I told Go Game Guru about it, they said I could return the book for a refund or swap it for a new one. I opted for the swap. Now I recommend them to everyone as the go to place for Go.
- Chris
