Discuss other possible moves
If you have any questions or want to discuss these problems, please leave a comment below at any time. You can use the coordinates on the problem images to discuss possible moves with other readers.
You can also download the problem file and review variations by clicking [link] on the left side of each problem. You'll need some software to open the .sgf file you download.

Thanks a lot for the problems. Something disturbs me on the hard one on the correct path. What if white doesn’t play atari and protects the corner with something like B4 or C4, black can take the stone but it makes a false eye. On the other hand, white’s corner is not alive… (I hope I don’t give too much hints for the problem)
White’s corner dies first if he tries to kill black.
I found the hard one quite easy this weak, all the moves were standard tesujis, no unusual move blind spots like some past ones.
Flo, you can download the SGF of the problem by clicking [link] and see some other variations. I believe I did add at least one that shows white overplaying and killing itself as Uberdude says.
Uberdude, I can see why this week’s hard problem would be easy for you. Like me, you’ve probably seen this shape come up quite often in various tesuji books. However, unless you’ve seen it before, it’s not that easy. You have to see the shortage of liberties as well as reading out that white’s corner will lose a capturing race.
The first two problems were surprisingly easy this week. The hard problem is quite nice, good tesuji exercise for kyu players (like myself
)
Thanks Martin, glad it was helpful
.
hmm make some dan ones this is basics
or add another level.. to make it fun for stronger players too to solve
I’m sure you have plenty of hard problem books where you are in Korea at the moment. You could solve those all day if you wanted to
.
If I posted even harder problems, most people wouldn’t be able to solve them and the solutions would be confusing, with many variations. I’m trying to help people learn rather than wow them. I still spend a lot of time doing easier problems like this because getting the easy stuff right 100% of the time is partly what makes you a strong player.
I think that once you’re strong enough to solve high level problems, you’re better off sitting down with a book and no other distractions and reading out the problems completely by yourself. But if you think it’s a good idea, why not put some harder problems, with complete solutions, on your site?
yes, if i had the time and knew how i would :/ anyway it’s ok this way
I couldn’t solve the hard one, does anyone have solution D:
@Tim: try to follow one of the two obvious cutting moves through to a situation where there is almost shortage of liberties for white. Then try to find a preparatory move that completes that shortage of liberties.
Easy: without thinking.
Intermediate: it took a few seconds before I saw the solution was as obvious as this. A one way street of about 4 moves deep.
Hard: here I had to crack the problem as described above, then it still requires a lot of reflection on the alternatives. Especially Flo’s variation needs a bit of thinking.
Question: I was able to do the easy one easily enough, the intermediate one took a little thought but I got it. However, it seems there’s a flaw with the problem itself. Following the correct path, if white had played her last move one point higher, black would still fail to capture that white group as white would then have two eyes. Or am I missing something?
No! because b can capture the 4 w stones on the left
Ah, you’re right. I can’t believe I missed that. Thank you for pointing that out.
Don’t worry Bill. It really does happen to everyone from time to time
.
Good problems. I like the level of this week. Sometimes, I can’t solve the hard ones. Thanks for all this problems David.
hi David
This week, l can’t get the link on mfgo as usually (l’ve got a file code) . ls this normal ? big problem for me because l find the answer for the hard problem (first time:-((
Hi Dany,
What happens when you click [Link] depends on your web browser and it’s settings. Try right clicking on the link and selecting something like ‘save target as’ or ‘download file’. Please let me know how you go and whether you need more help.
I find the first two problems easy this week. I couldn’t solve the third problem, but enjoyed the solution (shortage of liberties) when I played through the SGF file.
I don’t think it’s as easy as other people have said. I think it’s just that it’s a fairly well known problem and some people have memorized the solution. So don’t worry that you couldn’t solve it, you can remember this technique for next time
