Go Commentary: Joanne Missingham vs Park Jieun – 16th Samsung Cup

This game is from a preliminary match in the 16th Samsung Cup, between Joanne Missingham 5p and Park Jieun 9p.

First meeting since the Bingsheng Cup

Joanne Missingham (5 dan)

These two played a game in the final of the Bingsheng Cup last September (2010), and Park won that game to take the title.

Jieun is one of the strongest female players in Korea, along with Rui Naiwei 9p and Cho Hyeyeon 9p. On the other hand, Joanne must be the strongest female player in Taiwan and she has had good results lately.

Two very popular players

Park Jieun (9 dan, left) and Joanne Missingham play in the 16th Samsung Cup

Jieun is the most popular female player in Korea, and Joanne might be the same in Taiwan and China. Oh, she has lots of Australian fans as well because she was born in Australia. 🙂

After winning this game, Jieun beat Moon Dowon 2p, Tsao 3p and (in the final) Tang Yi 2p as well, to enter the main tournament.

On the other hand, Joanne defeated Kim Jaeyoung 1p before meeting Jieun. She played pretty well in this game too, but Jieun is more experienced.

Joanne’s been improving so amazingly quickly, so next time will be even better!

  2. DanielTom says:

    I enjoyed watching this game.
W48 (the invasion) was so nice!
Black played well, but against such a strong pro it is hard to catch up once you are behind… White didn’t give Joanne any chances.
Thanks for the game commentary! 🙂

  3. Is 122 at M17 also too low?

    • Younggil An says:

      Yes, you’re right.

That response is good in some cases, but it’s a bit low in this game. Black will continue at P17, W P18, B O16, and it’s satisfactory for Black.
